A photographers dream: Why the Isle of Wight is becoming a photography destination.

Have you noticed an increase in professional and amateur photography on the island? People taking up the hobby for the first time, or reigniting a passion?

We have. Even enthusiastic folks with an iPhone seem to be realising for the first time that the Isle of Wight is a photographic dream scape.

I attended a MasterClass at the weekend, lead by the talented duo of Adrift Visuals, Alice Greenfield and Sam Morris. Alice is an accomplished award winning film maker and photographer and Sam Morris an equally accomplished film maker and photographer.

‘Shooting at Golden Hour’ – A day spent with Sam and Alice on how they achieve their incredible visuals.

A packed room in the Albion hotel, filled with passionate photographers and delicious food. Alice took us through her process and taught us how to shoot at golden hour to achieve some incredible results.

But the thing that stood out to me was her explanation on why the island is so good for photography.

Alice has moved from London to be here on the island to support her creative journey as an independent film maker and photographer. She has left behind the loud London life for a peaceful, outdoor adventure -filled life here on our island.

“Why do you love shooting on the Island?” an attendee asked. Alice explained that being on an island meant you got to enjoy a costal golden hour twice a day, from the east to the west. This means that, as photographers who focus on the ocean and on natural beauty, they got twice as much time to create than if they lived in Devon or Cornwall.

Not to mention the fact that the Islands landscapes need no introduction. The climbing white cliffs in the east, to the glowing light of the needles lighthouse, we are totally spoilt for choice when it comes to shooting.

So who could blame anyone for wanting to pick up a camera and create something beautiful? It would be no surprise if the Island saw more people coming over, just to see our gorgeous landscapes.

Could the island be the next Iceland? Ok we’ve not got any glaciers, but we’ve

got loads to offer. Even the very occasional northern lights…

Only time will tell.
